Background

The ALA Federal and Armed Forces Libraries Round Table has been sponsoring Careers in Federal Libraries events since 2007. The first event is archived on the Library of Congress site. Our first moderator, Roberta Shaffer, has been a long-time supporter of these events. The event at AALL  2011 conference was in response to her request as the 22nd Law Librarian of Congress.

In 2008, a Google group was established to allow a space for collaboration after these events, as a way to aggregate job postings, articles, and educational items. There are 1,500+ members, library and information students from around the country who are interested in federal librarianship.

There are all types of federal libraries – law, medical, public, academic, school – all around the world that have a wide diversity of opportunities. To reach job seekers, we are expanding our social media presence from the Google group to this weblog, a Facebook page and Twitter. Over time, we may also seek to stand up a Google+ presence and a LinkedIn account where all social media apps are integrated and optimized.
